People Suffering From Dementia

The older a person gets, the more critical is total health care for quality of life.

Our human brain is a complex organ, it is our bodies “computer” so to speak. Dementia is a type of cognitive mental disorder which is caused by a disease of the brain, or by the disease of another body system that directly affects the brain. Drugs, alcohol, and other toxic agents may induce dementia.

A person affected by this disorder may have several problems in the normal “cognitive” routines that most people take for granted. A person with dementia has their memory, recognition, judgement and comprehension affected.

Also in addition to their reasoning being diminished, dementia accounts for emotional instability, depression, anxiety, and paranoia. A person will go through mood swings and may no longer be able to control impulses, so their behavior changes for the worse. A person suffering from dementia may become impatient and easily upset due to the mental or physical limitations they now must endure.

Dementia can be contributed to a wide range of physical abnormalities including diseases of the central nervous system, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, brain tumors, and a number of other ailments. There are times that the exact cause is not known, but as the symptoms indicate that there is some mental illness, this is especially the case when all other psychiatric problems are thought of and are ruled out.

It is common for a senior to develop Alzheimer’s disease, this is a kind of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease involves the loss of a person’s mental capabilities for example, memory, intellect, reasoning, and judgement. There may also be changes in the personality of a person affected by Alzheimer’s. Depending on the severity and type of dementia, a person could progressively become worse, may stay the same, or remit. Like other dementia’s, Alzheimer’s is treatable, short-term, but is progressive.

I sincerely hope that one day there will a cure or a way of helping our elderly fight this type of dementia that seems to eat away at their independence.

Both mental and physical health are needed for total health care.

Individual Health Insurance Plans should enable a person to have access to total health care.
